Bacteria and your bins: why hygiene is so important

Did you know that your bin is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria?

Think for a moment about what you put into your bins over the course of a fortnight.

You’ve got your food waste, cooked and raw. You’ll know yourself that fruit and bread can become mouldy very quickly in the wrong environment and you will also have observed food decaying in your food bin as you top it up with fresh peelings, out of date salads and food no one wanted to eat.

All your recycling waste, from cans and tins to clothes and glass, to cardboard and paper, to plastics, can all harbour bacteria, particularly if something doesn’t get rinsed out before it’s put in your bins.

Your general waste, which includes food wrappers, crisp bags, bread bags and all sorts of other bits and pieces that can’t be recycled, end up in your bin too. Over two weeks, we all accumulate a reasonable amount of rubbish and waste; and our bins carry the debris that our refuse collectors leave behind.

A dirty wheelie bin can attract vermin, cause offensive odours, become infested with flies and rapidly become a health hazard right outside your home or business. And that’s just one bin.

We all have good intentions too. We all think we’re going to clean out our bins regularly. For most of us, that thought process doesn’t get much further than thought itself and if we’re honest, most of us probably clean them out with each change of the season, if we’re lucky.

Wheelie bins aren’t the easiest thing to clean out either. And cleaning them out is one thing, but how many of us both to then go on and disinfect and deodorise our bins as well? You’re smiling and nodding as you read because you know you’d like to, you wish you had the time – and the inclination to do so – but the truth is, most of us don’t.

Did you know thought that wheelie bin cleaning is now considered to be an important factor towards reducing the risk of bacterial build-ups? When bacterial builds us, they can be responsible for common cold and viral infections, not to mention the majority of food poisoning cases in the UK.

The three amigos of bacteria that you most want to avoid, because they’re the most infectious bacteria, and most hazardous to human health are:

  • Salmonella
  • E-coli
  • Listeria

Salmonella

Salmonella is a nasty bacterium that sometimes turns up in the food supply, including chicken, tomatoes, peanuts, salsa, guacamole, and even pet food. It thrives in the intestinal tracts of animals and humans and can cause food poisoning. Illnesses range from mild to very serious infections.

E-coli

There are many types of E. coli, and most of them are harmless. But some can cause bloody diarrhea. Some strains of E. coli bacteria may also cause severe anemia or kidney failure, which can lead to death. Other strains of E. coli can cause urinary tract infections or other infections.

Listeria

Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems.

So what’s the answer to preventing a regular build of bacteria?
